Mississippi's only Children's Hospital, Children's of Mississippi has the state's only Level IV academic newborn/neonatal facility and is devoted to the health and well-being of the newborn. This NICU provides comprehensive care for babies delivered at our hospital as well as for those transferred from other hospitals in Mississippi and neighboring states. Mississippi is a state with many perinatal outcome challenges. Mississippi has the highest rate of premature birth in the United States (16.6% vs. the national average of 11.4%); the rate of premature birth within the African American population in Mississippi is 21%, according to the March of Dimes 2014 Premature Birth Report Card. Mississippi also leads the nation in obesity and other chronic diseases, like hypertension.

The disheartening problems our newborns confront also create an opportunity to intervene with utmost impact. Neonatal faculty are committed to identifying new approaches to prevention, diagnosis and treatment of newborn diseases and to promoting the health and well-being of newborn.

In short, the Newborn Division at Children's of Mississippi is well placed to play a major role to fill a major bench to bedside to bench translational research gap in the understanding and treatment of neonatal disorders.
